Write a blog post reflecting on a time when you or someone you know was misunderstood because of a single story. How can limiting ourselves to one perspective be harmful? What can we do to make sure we see people and cultures more fully?
I remember my brother gets mistaken for a black male all the time. He was born in Mexico but he’s really dark with kinky hair, looking like he’s Black. Due to this, he was always believed to be black, unable to prove otherwise unless he spoke Spanish. People believe Hispanic come in the colors they see on TV, with anyone who isn’t brown not being Hispanic in their eyes. Today, we did a CommonLit on single stories, how stereotypes and beliefs can be spread to paint people in a certain way to many others. I like this story because the author experienced many perspectives herself, allowing us to connect and relate further. Today, I feel good. We’re performing at Henderson today, so I hope that goes well.
